A Space Dependent Wigner Equation Including Phonon Interaction

چکیده
The quantum transport in far from equilibrium conditions is determined not only by the nanostructure potential, but also by dissipative processes due to interaction with phonons. Of interest is the reduced Wigner function fw r p t , which is obtained by taking the trace over the phonon coordinates. We present an equation for the reduced Wigner function which is obtained after a hierarchy of approximations. The equation treats the coherent part of the transport imposed by the nanostructure potential at a rigorous quantum level. It is general enough to account for the quantum effects in the interaction with phonons. The relevant quantum effects are collision broadening associated with the lack of energy conservation in the scattering process, collision retardation due to the memory character of the equation and the intra-collisional field effect, the action of the field during the collision process.

A Wigner equation with quantum electron – phonon interaction
We present a kinetic equation which is obtained after a hierarchy of approximations from the generalized electron–phonon Wigner function. The equation accounts for quantum effects in the electron–phonon interaction which are investigated by numerical experiments. An analysis shows that in contrast to the potential term, which is non local in momentum but local in space, the interaction term is ...

The presented equation treats the coherent part of the transport imposed by the nanostructure potential on a rigorous quantum level, utilizin...
متن کاملCoupling of Non-Equilibrium Green’s Function and Wigner Function Approaches
We propose a coupling scheme, where the advantages of the coherent Green’s function formalism are combined with the ability of the Wigner formalism to account for phasebreaking processes of interaction with phonons and other lattice imperfections. The Green’s function formalism is used to calculate the coherent Wigner function which provides the initial condition in an equation, from which corr...
متن کاملIntroduction to the special issue on Wigner functions
The Wigner function was first derived by E.P. Wigner around 1931 as an exotic outcome of the wave mechanics which, being defined in the phase space, does not favor either coordinate or momentum variables. Pioneered by H.J. Groenewold and J.E.Moyal theWigner formulation of quantum mechanics evolved until the end of last century, to a fully autonomous, independent alternative to Hilbert space mec...
متن کاملA quasi-particle model of the electron–Wigner potential interaction
The Wigner equation was used for the calculation of carrier transport in mesoscopic devices. The carrier transport has a coherent part determined by the Wigner potential Vw and a dissipative part accounting for the interaction with phonons. Models have been developed which solve the equation by using quasi-particles evolving over pieces of classical Newton trajectories. In a backward evolution ...
